The 00 gauge train set was the ultimate 'boy's toy' of the 1950s and '60s. Electric 00 gauge trains were introduced by Trix and Hornby Dublo in the mid-1930s, but the Second World War quickly halted production. However, they burst back onto the post-war scene with great success, and 00 quickly became the dominant scale in Britain, and was taken up by other large manufacturers including Tri-ang. Whilst the components of the sets themselves were often basic, they could be transformed into astonishing landscapes in the hands of imaginative builders. The sheer number of box sets, locomotives, rolling stock, buildings and accessories gave everyone the ability to form a bespoke layout. This beautifully illustrated introduction to the heyday of clockwork and electric 00 gauge trains tells their story up until 1975, when finer detailing and changing trends led to them becoming enthusiasts' models rather than children's toys.

Wherever in the world today children play with toys, the odds are that their playthings will have been made in the Far East and carry the imprint of a major American Corporation like Mattel or Hasbro. It was not always so: for much of the twentieth century, it was the British firm of Lines Brothers which claimed to be the Earth's largest toy manufacturer, growing so rapidly after its foundation in the 1920s that it became the world's first multi-national toy enterprise. Aided by ownership of the internationally-renowned toy shop, Hamleys of London, manufacturing plants in Europe and the major countries of the Commonwealth made generations of children familiar with the firm's Tri-ang brand of pedal cars, dolls houses and prams, model railways, and soft toys, as well as other Lines' products such as Pedigree dolls, Minic tinplate, Arkitex construction kits, FROG model aircraft, and Spot On die-cast vehicles. Although it is now more than forty years since the Lines Brothers empire collapsed in spectacular fashion, these toys are all still eagerly sought by collectors today. Many of the original brand names survive, albeit under different ownership: so, too, does Hamleys, while iconic toys once in the Lines' stable such as Sindy, Scalextric model racing cars, Arrow jigsaw puzzles and Subbuteo table football, are still manufactured today. This book recounts the rise and fall of a blue-chip British company and its products: it is a story of both triumph and disaster.

Toy boats, especially those designed to sail on the local pond, have always had a fascination for boys and girls of all ages. This book celebrates these boats, which many will remember purchasing with their pocket money. Before the 1914-1918 war many toy boats were of German origin, but when hostilities ceased there was a surge in buying British. Many manufacturers took advantage of this, and British toy boats became extremely popular right up to World War II, with numerous seaside resorts actually building special ponds for yachts and clockwork vessels. Interest continued right up to the introduction of electronic toys, at which point the majority of manufacturers realized that the more traditional toy boat was no longer in demand. This book covers that golden period of toy boats, from 1920 to 1960.
