Adjusting to life in his boyhood home of Waset, Qaa, as Chief of the Medjay and High Priest in the Temple of Amun, has little time to enjoy the Upper Capital. A new case, involving fake votive offerings, has him outraged. Why would a merchant deal in fake votives - to accumulate wealth! Even more disturbing, making unacceptable offerings to the gods could have disastrous consequences. As he investigates further, unsavory doings are unearthed, putting the Temple in jeopardy. But when his prime suspect, a votive maker in ill health, turns up dead in his own shop, Qaa has his suspicions: Was it the hand of the gods meting out divine justice for disrespecting them? Did the stress of the investigation and the possible public embarrassment cause his untimely demise? Or, did someone have reason to silence the dishonest merchant? Though Qaa forges ahead to solve the mystery, he fears his own sterling reputation may be tarnished by accusations of impropriety. Regardless, Qaa will not rest until the evildoer is brought to justice.
