Christopher Lloyd OBE shows how he and Fergus Garrett, Head Gardener at Great Dixter, choose and orchestrate plants for maximum effect. Having covered the principles of succession planting, Lloyd explores the ingredients from anchor plants and permanent perennials to drop-in plants and self-sowers - necessary to ensure continually lively borders. Alexander McKenzie is known for his evocative luminous landscape paintings which recall both the themes of Western symbolist painting and the techniques of the 17th Century Dutch Old Masters. For McKenzie, the landscape is both a place for contemplation and a metaphor for a personal journey. Created entirely in his mind's eye, the landscapes, which are often of cultivated gardens, are of places that don't exist but instead are a means of exploring the symbols, narratives and metaphors conjured from his imagination and memory. The visual symbols located in a maze-like formation throughout each work provide a pathway for the viewer to navigate the underlying narrative in each work. McKenzie explains: 'The suggested journey and choices of direction in each of these paintings reflect the decisions, both temporal and spiritual, that all of us must make in our lives.' Continuing Hazelhurst's series of major surveys of artists from southern Sydney, this will be McKenzie's first solo exhibition at Hazelhurst and will be accompanied by a major monograph.
